Getting started with meditation is always the hardest part. To get into the habit of meditating it is best to add meditation to your daily routine. Choosing the same time every day will promote the habit (and a good one at that). I find meditating first thing in the morning before I do any other activities works best. If you are unable to do a morning practice then anytime that suits you will be beneficial. Any meditation is better than none.
Set aside 15 minutes at the same time each morning. Close any windows and shut the door and make sure all phones are turned off. Sit in a chair with your feet on the floor. Set a timer for 10 minutes, that way you won't be distracted wondering what time it is and this also allows for 5 minutes to come out of the meditation.
Now take three deep breaths then settle into your natural rythm of breathing. Notice your lungs moving in and out with each breath. All you need to do is keep your attention on your breathing the whole time. If you are distracted by any noise or thoughts just notice them and focus back on your breathing. You may have to do this many times in the beginning as it is all part of learning process. Anytime you are distracted or your mind wanders, simply bring your attention back to your breathing.
When the timer rings, slowly open your eyes and stretch your arms and legs. To complete your meditation wait a few minutes before you stand up, just incase you are feeling a little groggy, when you feel more awake and alert stand up and stretch for a couple of minutes. Now you are ready to continue with your day.
Like most things that are new to us it takes practice, practice and more practice to master it. Try it for 21 days and see if you can create this basic meditation as a daily routine.
